Focus on rapport

Many of the people who have joined LinkedIn are actively looking for beneficial relationships. Some aren’t. So you have to network on LinkedIn in the same way you would network at a business event.

You must not be heavy-handed or over promote yourself. The key is to treat LinkedIn as an open front door into your business.

You need to use it as a way to encourage people to come in and find out more about you.

The way to do this is to seek out interesting people to whom you can offer mutual benefit. Not just your service or product but also introductions, referrals, cross promotion, expertise etc.

That gives people the opportunity to like what you have to say and leads to rapport.

If you can build on that rapport over a period of time, you’ll be able to create the relationships that lead to business opportunities.
